Our definition of high quality learning
At the International School of Florence, we have developed a shared vision of educational excellence across our Junior and Upper Schools. Our faculty adheres to rigorous practices that guarantee high-quality learning for every student.
We view high-quality learning as an active, evolving process and a lifelong goal. It shapes how we evaluate progress, informs our teaching methods, and guides our professional growth. At ISF, this process is characterized by:
- Inquiry & collaboration: rooted in reflection and purposeful teamwork among students, teachers, and our diverse global community.
- Curiosity & agency: sparking creativity and giving students ownership over their educational journey with moments for reflection and celebration.
- Targeted growth: meeting students exactly where they are, building on existing knowledge, and challenging them to meet ambitious milestones. Real-
- World connections: authentically linking lessons to global contexts to build transferable skills for a rapidly changing world. Holistic Development:
- Actively promoting intellectual capabilities, socio-emotional growth, and physical and mental well-being.
IB Approaches to Learning (ATL Skills)
Approaches to Learning (ATLs) are a fundamental pillar of our International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. They directly complement our focus on deep conceptual understanding, structured inquiry, and the IB Learner Profile.
We firmly believe that learning how to learn is the most important skill a student can master. These frameworks support students of all ages in becoming self-regulated individuals who ask great questions, set realistic goals, and pursue their goals with determination. Our teachers actively embed opportunities to develop these five core skill sets into authentic, daily learning experiences:
- Thinking skills: developing critical analysis, creative problem-solving, and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
- Communication skills: mastering forms of expression, active listening, and digital literacy to convey ideas clearly across cultures.
- Research skills: learning how to locate, evaluate, organize, and ethically synthesize information from diverse media sources.
- Self-Management skills: cultivating time management, emotional resilience, self-motivation, and healthy organization habits.
- Social skills: fostering collaboration, leadership, conflict resolution, and the empathy needed to work in diverse global teams.
