Building Teamwork and Organization Skills in Grade 1

Grade 1 is wrapping up an exciting Unit of Inquiry: How We Organize Ourselves. To bring their learning to life, the students participated in an engaging group activity that challenged their collaboration and organizational skills.

In this activity, students were assigned to mini-communities, or "T-shirt companies," tasked with creating as many high-quality T-shirts as possible within a set timeframe. The catch? Each T-shirt had to meet four quality-control criteria, and the teams had to share one set of tools among all members.

The first round revealed key insights into teamwork and resource management. Afterward, students gathered to reflect on three important questions:

  1. Did you feel supported in your group? What made you feel supported?
  2. What was challenging? How did you overcome the challenge?
  3. What could you do better next time?

These reflections led to thoughtful discussions about how effective communication, mutual support, and adaptability can overcome challenges. When the students returned to their tables for round two, they applied their new insights. Every group produced more T-shirts in the second round, showing significant improvement in their collaboration and efficiency.

This activity highlighted how a supportive community can achieve shared goals with greater ease and positivity. It also reinforced key elements of the Unit of Inquiry, helping students understand how organization and teamwork play a role in achieving success in real-world contexts.
