MIDDLE SCHOOL

During the middle school years, students choose to follow either the International or the Italian Program. All students, regardless of their program choice, take English, Italian, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, and a third language. Students in the Italian Program follow some of these subjects through the medium of Italian, while all classes in the International Program are conducted in English.

Typically an International Program student’s schedule will include:

English Literature	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Italian Language	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Social Studies	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Science	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Mathematics	Full time (220 minutes per week)
French or Spanish	Part time (110 minutes per week)
Physical Education	Part time (110 minutes per week)
IT/Music/Art/Theatre Arts	Part time (110 minutes per week)

An Italian Program student’s schedule will include:

Italian Literature	Full time (220 minutes per week)
English Language or Literature	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Storia e Geografia (in Italian)	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Scienza e Matematica (in Italian)	Full time (220 minutes per week)
Mathematics	Full time (220 minutes per week)
French or Spanish*	Part time (110 minutes per week)
Physical Education	Part time (110 minutes per week)
IT/Music/Art/Theatre Arts	Part time (110 minutes per week)

*Students who are beginners in English may be exempt from the third language requirement during their first year of the Italian Program.

Middle School

Assessment at the International School of Florence is criterion-based. In each subject, specific skills and content knowledge are defined, and student performance is matched to their level of achievement according to the related criterion. Marks are then given on a scale of 1 – 7, described as follows:

7: Excellent

6: Very good

5: Good

4: Satisfactory

3: Mediocre

2: Poor

1: Very poor
